Israel was formed after the United Nation approved the partition of  Palestine into a Jewish and Arab state in 1947.  In 1948, Israel formally declared its independence . There have been many wars between Israel and its surrounding Arab countries, which has allowed Israel to expand its boundaries.

The state of Israel is divided into six administrative districts - Haifa District , Jerusalem District, Tel Aviv District, Center District, Southern District, Northern District.  Jerusalem is the largest city . Tel Aviv and Haifa  on the coast are the other two large cities.
